Who Tells Me True: More Research

Who Tells Me True is the curious the title of Michael Strange’s autobiography. My library copy has been collecting dust and is actually overdue but I finally dipped into last night.  I’m so glad I did. It’s kind of fascinating. Michael Strange (born Blanche Oelrichs) was Margaret Wise Brown’s lover for several years. I think it’s interesting that Margaret Wise Brown, the writer who wrote lovely lines like “goodnight nobody” and “the important thing about the rain is that it is wet” was involved with a woman who wrote like this:

However, these boys decanted the nostalgia of real charm into my young life. They blew over my eager ardent mind the first fumes of sophistication, of that quizzical complaisance between a long grappling with the indisputable demands of nature, and requirements of outer form, that synchronizing over stretches of time, have produced civilization.

No wonder the relationship was such a drama!
