The other day I was reading a book about a book about the coral reef. I was struck by a sentence suggesting that the health of the coral reef depends in a small part on the fact that the glass eel (pearl fish) gets protection nestled inside the anus of a cucumber. How wonderful! I did a little more looking into it. And indeed, the sea cucumber is the earthworm of the reef. Around the same time I was “digesting” this fact, Stephanie, my partner was getting a tattoo of oranges on her arm. She grew up surrounded by orange groves (no longer there) in southern California. I toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo of a glass eel and a sea cucumber on my upper arm. I probably won’t. But I drew this picture, as a possibility. It’s good to remember the little, magical details in life.
