One day in the 1960s this man, Cleve Backster, a polygraph expert, decided to see what would happen when he hooked up his lie detector machine to the Dracaena in his office. He found activity registered on his machine when the plant was watered. Activity was also registered when he lit a match.
That looks a lot like a Janet Craig Dracana hooked up to his machine.
You can learn more about popular office plants, where they came from and how they got into our cubicles, when I install Field Guide for Office Plants at Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn at the end of the month.
