I took a ride out to the Wykoff Farmhouse in Canarsie to check out the garden and see how the Lenape Corn that Jason Gaspar, the caretaker, planted. The corn looked great, very vigorous and healthy. He got it in the ground a little late so it’ll be a late harvest.
Afterwards I pedaled on into East New York and to Starrett City where there is a small garden in the middle of a vast lawn, under the the watchful gaze of the Starrett City residential towers. And in that garden is some Lenape Corn. There are some decent sized husks on the stalks. We hope they will make it to harvest as there is some controversy swirling around the corn. Turns out a co-sponsor of the garden is desperate to plant butterfly bushes. In order to do so she wants to rip out the corn ASAP. The gardener is working to convince her to delay her strange plan.
