Conditions on the Ground is part of the Battle Ground exhibit on View at Proteus Gowanus April 13 -June 30th
The Wetlands file cabinet drawer for the Conditions on the Ground piece refers to the fierce fighting around the Gowanus Creek. The area was a marshland at the time and the fighting took place at high tide. A 15 year old soldier describes the conditions:
Inside the drawer a video is playing. Its a loop of footage I shot this winter at various spots Staten Island where wetland systems had been restored and were thriving. These restored wetland areas were especially successfully in absorbing the impact of hurricane Sandy. The footage was shot with an old bolex I inherited from my grandfather. The music is by Andrew Vladeck inspired by Good Old Colony Days a tune that was a popular broadside at the turn of the 18th Century.
