The school nurse called to say Huck wasn’t feeling well and asked if I could pick him up. I guess while they waited the nurse asked what I did for a living. Huck said I make bunny comics for grown-ups. Well… not really for a living. Before the call I was sketching out a scene between Ursula Nordstrom the formidable Children’s Book Publisher (Margaret Wise Brown’s publisher and champion) and Anne Carroll Moore the powerful Children’s Book Librarian at the New York Public Library. The two were not fond of each other.
Also in my research I learned that Nordstrom was a lesbian. I was not surprised. The more I research this project the more I encounter fascinating mid-century lesbians!
