Built to Last

I took an ice cold bike ride out to 25th and 5th Ave in BK to photograph the Weir Greenhouse. It’s a landmarked but very dilapidated victorian era commercial greenhouse. The photos are for my  The Field Guide to Office Plants. Though it is now in the possession of Greenwood Cemetery it retains the atmosphere of hasty abandonment. Remarkably, inside is a large tropical plant. Dried in its pot. Would it crumble to dust if touched?

I was reminded of the time I visited Hadrian’s Villa with my mother outside of Rome. As we wandered together around the ruins, she stopped and said, “I wonder what happened? These look like they were build to last.”
